The Watcher I (2022)

"The Watcher I" is a birdlike figure, which, when placed in the landscape, looks forward into an unknown future. The figure is both organic in form and possesses machinic qualities. The shape of its head is based on a piece of rusty seaside railing I found on the beach. The creature carries with it an egg, the embodiment of a new generation, and a gearwheel, representative of a mechanical past. The work reflects on how, as humans, we position ourselves in our past and future, i.e. how we are continuously reshaping ourselves and the landscape in our aspirations towards technological progress, yet are rooted in the history on which we build.

"The Watcher I" is part of the Figures of Speech series, which comments on the idiosyncrasies of human behaviour.

The circular base is made of bronze-coated steel,
