Much of my recent practice investigates the paradox of connection in the digital age: we humanise machines, teaching them to simulate empathy and even love, while simultaneously dismissing human relationships formed through screens as “unreal.” We are caught in a world where chatbots are “boyfriends” and online lovers are “not real” because they exist only in our inboxes. I am fascinated by this paradox — the humanisation of machines and the mechanisation of human bonds — and the way technology both enables and undermines intimacy.
Working with pastels allows for both quick, spontaneous sketching and a more elaborate, painterly approach to the subject. I prefer drawing on darker paper in a technique similar to painting in oils where I work from dark to light and from thin to thicker streaks.
